We’ve been walking more in our immediate neighborhood. I don’t usually talk about it much, because – well, there’s not much to talk about. It’s a sketchy, industrial area. And I don’t typically take photos of it because – well, I don’t want to walk around with my camera for fear having it snatched from me. But, there’s a lot to see, and a lot of photos waiting to be captured. There’s tremendous texture to be found in industrial lots.

We used to go urban-exploring all the time in metro Detroit…. around all the abandoned buildings and lots that littered the city. One of my favorite places was an abandoned turn of the century asylum for children – so spooky. Recently I discovered that Massachusetts has numerous abandoned asylums, and I brought up this funfact to my husband and asked if we could go explore and photograph the buildings. During [what seemed like 2 hours] a few seconds of awkward silence, I realized this was the difference between someone who grew up in an old industrial city, versus someone who grew up in modern suburbs around the world. MP just thought I was insane for bringing up the idea (no pun intended), let alone thinking it would be a fun adventure. We’ll see.

I’m a sucker for packaging, I can’t help myself. This little cup of goodness in the plain black and white label stood out in the sea of Stonyfield cups. I had to try it. It doesn’t really taste like vanilla, though I see little flecks of vanilla bean. And it is TART- like…. puckering, eye-watering tart. I added a bit of honey to it, and decided it’s yummy. The texture is like the cream top of cream-top yogurt, which is my favorite kind.

Just a very quick post…. we are heading to Martha’s Vineyard bright and early. Fingers crossed the “20-foot swells” don’t come to fruition and hurricane Bill fizzles out and/or takes a sharp right. It will be stressful enough dealing with the Obama press corps and entourage as wells as the fall out from a rumored Clinton Wedding. Not bad for a first-time visit to the Vinyaaad.

Got these vintage arrows this week and I’m in love with them. I received the box on Tuesday but have been too busy to open it and enjoy. No longer! Look at them!

It’s really hard finding summer fabrics for boys. I love prints, but the vast majority of fabrics lean heavily to the girly side of things. On one hand it’s great because I always find great prints for Floria:

On the other hand, the boys don’t end up with a whole lot of handmade goods (in comparison to Flo). But I found these fabrics recently….

Okay, so that last one I actually used to make Floria jammie bottoms, but I think the colors could go either way. The 100% cotton fabrics are available here (many more boy colors available). They definitely have a retro feel, like those funky short sleeve shirts hipster guys wear with tight, black, skinny jeans. Normally you have to be careful when buying shirting fabrics, as often times they are a cotton/poly blend, which in my opinion is not only slippery but also just not as nice to touch nor does it wick away summer sweat. But these cotton Maverick yarn dyed fabrics are nice and light, perfect for summer projects!

The B-52’s have always been a favorite of mine…. when we were little this was one of the songs Julie and I would sing along to and try to match our voices to Cindy and Kate. Our Dad was fairly patient with this type of thing on road trips. We were pretty young, junior high, when we were obsessed. So this footage is a bit ahead of my time, but how amazing it must have been to see these guys live in a sleepy college town in Georgia when they were just starting out. I’ve seen them many times in concert, but by the time I saw them they were performing in arenas- already hugely popular with songs like Love Shack. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I would’ve loved to see them in a little club in Athens when they were still cultivating their sound. I truly think there’s no band like them, they were from another time. Both futuristic and retro, certainly ground breaking.

I’m sorry I’ve gone missing. I just don’t seem to have any words these last few weeks. Well… I do, but I don’t know where to begin. Nor do I know that I have the right words or the fortitude to talk about things lately. But, I’m getting there.

Sometimes I find when I’m walking to work, I turn childhood songs over in my mind. I think it’s the cadence/speed of my walk, but there’s definite rhythm. Most often it goes back to Jump Rope Jingles that we used to sing while, wait for it, jumping rope! We grew up in an inner city, and jumping rope & clapping games were de rigeur for the neighborhood. I don’t know if kids even jump rope any more (at least they don’t around here), but we did. In our driveway, all the time. And I made it a mission to find this book and a jump rope for the boys to mail with their new sweater coats.

A lot of our inspiration came from this book, which my mother must have purchased at some point when we were little. This copyright is 1972, originally 1961.

My sister is going to see this ‘Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear’ jingle and lose her mind.

The book arrived today and looking over the illustrations by Shelia Greenwald, memories came flooding back of our driveway, stubbed toes, hot pavement and neighborhood kids jumping rope until the sun went down.

I need a little favor….does anyone out there read Turkish? Babelfish & AltaVista don’t do Turkish and the one online Turkish translator I found is fairly useless. I am having a little problem with a blog that has taken my photos and my kimono pattern for their own use. I can’t seem to email them , join the ‘network’ or even comment to request they take my photos and pattern down.

If anyone out there could give me some tips on this situation, or, if you happen to speak Turkish- that would be a GREAT help. Feel free to email me if you have any info that would help.

Thanks!

I ordered a few sets of these cards a couple of months ago from Screech Owl Designs. They have come in so handy for sending along notes with packages, but I also plan on framing three of them and putting them in a wall collage.

Welcome

Feel free to look around at a few of my habits. I really appreciate all comments and will try to respond. My responses will appear in the comments section, so please check back.

not a good idea

Please do not take any photos or content without my permission. Just ask, I'm sure it will be fine. In return, I pledge to do the same. It goes without saying, but just in case: Please do not take the patterns I offer for free on the Tutorials page and post them on your site. It is okay to link to them. If you find yourself in the habit of plagiarism, I reserve the right to document my feelings about it right here for everyone to read. You've been forewarned, so no whining!
