As I seem to do when I’m pulling myself out of the black fog, I’ve been listening to a lot of music lately. This song seems to sum up my mindset in the last few weeks…. especially the part about thoughts full of regret, and feeling like I’ve lost my way. I’ve got to work on that bit.

I love Ashley’s drawings. Her work appeals to me on many levels, but I am often captured by the subtle little faces of her people and creatures. I’ve collected many of her pieces, both squirreled them away and given as gifts. I decided to focus on a particular theme and started collecting all of her pieces that involve houses. It started with the black houses and grew. Now, every time she does a house, I must have it. Eventually I hope to have this wall covered with her house drawings.

Thank you Jules for turning me on to her….. love it.

And is it just me or is so much of the new ‘alt pop’ scene lifting heavily from Missing Persons? I mean, the Lady Gaga thing completely, 100% escapes me, I don’t get it. Maybe it’s because I’m getting old and I remember Dale Bozzio? Frankly, she did it better and with better music, I mean right?

There’s a little joke in my family about my undying love for a certain genre of music. I still have every CD, and now the digital files, for some of my favorite bands from a certain time period in my past. I listen to them and select from them amongst all my new music. Primary among those would be Echo & the Bunneyman. Julie gets a huge kick out of my devotion to them and how almost every mix CD I make her has a song by either the Smiths, the Cure or Echo. Lol. Can’t help it, I guess.

All day I’ve been sewing to some of my favorites…. I’ll have things to show tomorrow!

The B-52’s have always been a favorite of mine…. when we were little this was one of the songs Julie and I would sing along to and try to match our voices to Cindy and Kate. Our Dad was fairly patient with this type of thing on road trips. We were pretty young, junior high, when we were obsessed. So this footage is a bit ahead of my time, but how amazing it must have been to see these guys live in a sleepy college town in Georgia when they were just starting out. I’ve seen them many times in concert, but by the time I saw them they were performing in arenas- already hugely popular with songs like Love Shack. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I would’ve loved to see them in a little club in Athens when they were still cultivating their sound. I truly think there’s no band like them, they were from another time. Both futuristic and retro, certainly ground breaking.

I’m sorry I’ve gone missing. I just don’t seem to have any words these last few weeks. Well… I do, but I don’t know where to begin. Nor do I know that I have the right words or the fortitude to talk about things lately. But, I’m getting there.

We found a cabin, so off to Acadia National Park we go. Maine has a certain calling for me, we visit as often as we can and often times find ourselves dreaming about a little piece of land or a cabin of our own….someday. For now a few days in the peace and quiet will help us both escape an incredibly overwhelming month and an entire week of heavy carry-out food. My Joy+Ride goal was to focus more on MP and Lottie and myself. Just focus, and find an awareness that feels so fleeting lately. Here it is, almost June, and I’m just now sorting it out. Ah well, better late than never. The joy will come.

Bar Harbor is only about 4+ hours from here, but it may as well be a world away. I’m bring reading materials for weeks- I’m particularly thrilled about this one. I’m only a few chapters in and already I can tell that this may go down as an all-time favorite. The weather promises to be a bit cooler than Boston (thankfully) and most of the sea kayaking outfitters still have openings.

Have a wonderful Memorial Holiday, or just a great ol’ weekend! Here’s to Maine!

This site is great…. It’s a public blog on which anyone can post. There’s an article up right now that may be of interest to many.  Usually the posts and comments are great, if not funny.

Another site that cracks me up. I particularly enjoyed some of the Mother’s Day postings.

A great movie we saw last weekend. Add it to your netflix queue along with this (which I’ve seen 4 times) and this.

Lastly, Memorial Weekend snuck up on us and we are trying desperately to find a great cabin to rent in Maine at the last minute, preferably less than a 5 hour drive from Boston. The keywords would be: secluded, remote, quiet, silent…..beautiful. Any recommendations would be hugely appreciated!

Sometimes I find when I’m walking to work, I turn childhood songs over in my mind. I think it’s the cadence/speed of my walk, but there’s definite rhythm. Most often it goes back to Jump Rope Jingles that we used to sing while, wait for it, jumping rope! We grew up in an inner city, and jumping rope & clapping games were de rigeur for the neighborhood. I don’t know if kids even jump rope any more (at least they don’t around here), but we did. In our driveway, all the time. And I made it a mission to find this book and a jump rope for the boys to mail with their new sweater coats.

A lot of our inspiration came from this book, which my mother must have purchased at some point when we were little. This copyright is 1972, originally 1961.

My sister is going to see this ‘Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear’ jingle and lose her mind.

The book arrived today and looking over the illustrations by Shelia Greenwald, memories came flooding back of our driveway, stubbed toes, hot pavement and neighborhood kids jumping rope until the sun went down.
